WHEN COVID-19 HIT the creative sector hard - one report estimates nonprofit arts and cultural organizations have lost nearly $15 billion in revenue since early 2020 - Ohio State’s Wexner Center for the Arts created opportunities online and eliminated geographic barriers for audiences. ross bishoff ARTS & CULTURE Bringing art home When COVID-19 temporarily closed the doors and halted in-person performances, Ohio State’s Wexner Center for the Arts responded with characteristic creativity. Hearing about other experiences and opinions will be almost as valuable as the formal education. Innovation comes at the intersection of different disciplines. I even worked there remotely this past summer on coronavirus evolution. My sophomore year, I had a major experience at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. I’m fortunate that my principal investigator at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Nicolas Wein, let me think independently. Our hope is to provide an organizational structure to lower the barrier so any student can give back to their community easily. Our idea is that Pass the Class could exist as a central entity with chapters at other universities. How are you dismantling barriers with Pass the Class, through which Ohio State students can mentor and tutor disadvantaged youth? When we started Pass the Class, we went into affordable housing centers or drop-in centers for homeless and at-risk youth and convinced them we could help. The first step is making it clear to people of different backgrounds that it is an opportunity. I was fortunate to have an older brother who went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and knew about people doing research in high school. They didn’t know about the academic culture here. What are barriers to that now? One of the biggest privileges is often just becoming aware of the opportunities. It would bring a lot of people into science and progress the field. A dream of mine would be to live in a world in which high school students from any background can easily get involved with research.
